Wine Advocate: There are 45,000 bottles of the 2003 Hermitage La Chapelle, which was cropped at a meager 16 hectoliters per hectare. Stylistically it is vaguely similar to the 1990 and undeniably the finest La Chapelle since that prodigious wine. While not quite the bell-ringer I had hoped for, it is a brilliant effort with a deep ruby/purple-tinged color and a big, sweet nose of cassis, new saddle leather, roasted meats, and dried herbs. Full-bodied, pure, rich, and long in the finish with 14.1% natural alcohol (one of the highest levels ever recorded for this wine), it looks to be set for at least 20-30 years of longevity. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030.
